The School Year
We are all a year older and a year wiser
But the "I's" have risen like an angry geyser
It's all or nothing, pass or fail
Either make up work, there is no bail
School is soon over, we are almost done
Summer is upon us, now we can have some fun
We get off this wave, though it's not the end
Catching a new wave, a new journey to start again

“Earths Mightiest Heroes” Bring in the Top Box Office Sales of All Time
And “Katniss” Trails Close Behind-

By: Aidan Marvick & Rico Granger
The Avengers and The Hunger Games both broke the first weekend box office sales records. The Hunger Games broke the all time spring release sales in an opening weekend, bringing in over $155 million, but The Avengers took it all, claiming the highest box offices sales in an opening weekend of all time, earning of $200.3 million in the three day time period. These record sales have been attributed to the largely successful advertising of the movies and to the previous fan base created by The Hunger Games book, by Susan Collins, and The Avengers comic book series developed by Marvel.
The Avengers shattered the all time opening weekend box office record with $200.3 million. The record was previously set in 2011 by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, which earned $168.3 million. Chris Hemswoth say, “Growing up, I was the ‘girl’ in the family,” but it looks like his manly character, Thor, has brought in many adoring fans and helped make The Avengers the best movie of the 21st century. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 still holds the record for largest box office sales in an opening day, which was $92 million. The Hunger Games took its record of largest box office sales in an opening weekend of a spring release from the movie Alice in Wonderland of 2010 which made $116.1 million in the first three days. Even with The Hunger Games and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 making huge box offices sales, there is no doubt that The Avengers, with and overall gross of $832.4 million, is the best movie around.

Elections for the 2012-2013 Student Council took place on April 24th.

Student Body:

Class of 2013:
President: Arrion Rosales-Llantos
Vice President: Sam Mahelona

President: Jeremy Gambing
Vice President: Tumama Tupuola
Secretary: Malia Varron
Treasurer: Mele Teaupa

Class of 2015:
President: Marissa Bryant-Manago

I asked some of the new student council members what they want to accomplish during their time in office. Sam Mahelona from the class of 2013 said, "I want my class to know that I tried my best doing what ever it was that I could to make the senior year our best year. I want to do something that kealakehe advisors have never seen and to just make sure that I served a purpose to my community and classmates from freshman to seniors." Jeremy Gambing from the class of 2014 said, "My goal is to be ready for Senior Year. By doing fundraisers and events to raise money. But being ready for Senior year also means coming together. I want to be able to bring our class and school together for these few years of high school. In my year of office I want to be able to do my best for my class and make their voices be heard." When Jennifer Anderson from the Class of 2015 was asked the same question she stated, "Well, to accomplish becoming a leader while being in student council and being able to be apart of the Sophomore class decisions for all student activities."

There are still open positions that interested students can run for in the fall of the 2012-2013 school year.

Scholarships, Awards, and Hardworking Seniors

By: Alexis Transfiguracion and Edie Hall
Live music from the “Sensations”, delicious refreshments and a supporting community make way for Kealakehe High School's Senior Awards Night. On May 9, 2012, seniors were recognized for their hard work and determination. About 32 scholarships and awards were granted to these seniors. Senior Katelyn Howard-Gomez, our student body president, was awarded an eighth of the awards and scholarships granted. The most awards and scholarships received out of all the seniors that night. But no other scholarship was as dumbfounding as University of Washington's full field scholarship. This scholarship was worth half a million dollars. The fortunate senior to receive this great scholarship was Psalm Wooching, a football player who attended a division one school for one year of high school. Other seniors recognized that night were Rachel Bianchi and Jonathan Kutsunai. Both students got an amazing total of six awards and scholarships. Awarding these well deserving seniors were proud teachers and members of our local community. These seniors showed their appreciation to all those who contributed with their warm smiles and kind attitudes as they walked towards the stage. If it weren't for the colleges, clubs, community groups, and local businesses in helping to get our seniors ready for college, this night would not exist. A big mahalo goes out to those who were able to make this night possible and congratulations to ALL the seniors who were given awards and scholarships on Senior Awards Night. Go Waveriders c/o 2012!!!

Club Article

With a plethora of clubs to choose from, it’s difficult to decide which ones would be the best use of your time. Each one offers unique aspects of education that require dedication to teachers and students. Robotics and International Clubs are two of the countless clubs our peers find interesting. Hopefully, next year all students will discover a club they truly appreciate.
Every Tuesday and Friday when the final bell rings, 20 Kealakehe Tiki Techs Robotics team members meet in the Kealakehe High M building with one mentality, to strive for the summit. Students work diligently to prepare for multiple competitions, set up community outreach events, and hone their skills in creative thinking, engineering, and technical documentation.
Through the course of this past year, the team has competed in underwater ROV, VEX, BotBall, and FRC in 9 different competitions at the state national and international levels. At these competitions the team has accumulated multiple awards including the honor of being the first team from Hawaii to ever go to FIRST and VEX internationals twice in their first two years of participation. They were declared champions of the Maui VEX state tournament by way of their robots’ performance and winners of the FIRST Engineering Inspiration Award at the FRC state championship.
“The Engineering Inspiration award is an even greater achievement than winning the robotics points competition” said robotics coach Justin Brown. It is a NASA funded award which recognizes the best team to exemplify an effective robot, as well as an amazing program.
“Part of what makes this team so good is the amount of energy and money we feed back into our community through the events we’ve hosted and the teams we’ve started” said robotics coach Mike Hauk. The team has begun 5 robotics teams at neighboring schools with students ranging from kindergarten to 8th grade. They have also hosted multiple outreach events to spread word of Science Technology Engineering and Math (Stem) and For Inspiration of Science and Technology (FIRST) by bringing together teams from all levels of robotics to show off their creations, and getting real world engineers to come give these students an idea of what future lies ahead of them.
In the past this team went to internationals riding the wings of another team’s greatness. Now they pave their own path, and bring others along with them. Striving for the top is what they’ve done, and it’s what they will continue to do.

If one were to stroll into Mrs. Solmirin’s room on Wednesdays during activity period there would be anywhere from 30 to 50 students who come from Mexico, Korea, the Philippines, Thailand, Chile, and many other countries around the world. They enjoy learning about different cultures through language, traditions, and an upbeat, positive teacher.
Dialect is one aspect of the student’s studies, Chinese, Kosraean, Pohnpei, and Tagalog are just a few of the languages learned. Food, music, and cultural traditions are also an extensive part of the classroom activity. Every Wednesday, a student from a different country would present unique information about their culture, such as what the schools were like and what clothing was used. Sharing food is another satisfying way of teaching, which was practiced multiple times throughout the year.
Jennifer Solmirin decided to create a club like this because she was once part of a similar club in college. “It’s like being in an international society within a small community” she states during her interview. Many friends were made in the club Mrs. Solmirin joined in college and she hopes that it has been the same marvelous experience for her students here. Remember, no man is an island; together we can accomplish any and all things imaginable.

3.Q:What if you liked a guy, and he likes some one way prettier and smarter? Should I go forget it or go for it?

A: Your Choice of Strategy:
•When you get home, immediately do your homework
